PREVENTION AND FIGHT
AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS

In view of the high tuberculosis rates in Huaycán (420 cases for each 100,000 inhabitants in 2006 in the most excluded areas where the Señor de los Milagros Health Care Center is providing health services), Samusocial Perú actively participates in the prevention and fight against tuberculosis in Huaycán through prevention actions and network strengthening.

Since the end of 2006, Samusocial Perú participates in the Program of Prevention and Fight against Tuberculosis of the Señor de los Milagros Health Care Center thanks to the Children of Peru Foundation. The project is coordinated in two fronts:

  • Strengthening the Health Care Center’s laboratory material capacity, in order to ensure the quick diagnosis of tuberculosis cases.

  • Strengthening the nutritional condition of the patients who receive tuberculosis treatment in the Health Center, through the support to its nutritional recovery module. The weekly supply of food and vitamin complements allows not only providing an adequate diet to patients, who need it to endure the treatment, but also offers a space where experiences and knowledge can be shared to strengthen positive attitudes for TBC patients and their families.

Furthermore, Samusocial Perú focuses its efforts in prevention on tuberculosis. Through nursing visits to the most excluded areas of Huaycán and medical care in Prevention Centers, Samusocial Perú professionals monitor the beneficiaries suffering from tuberculosis, encouraging them to follow the treatment and maintain a healthy and balanced diet.

Likewise, awareness campaigns aimed at schoolchildren on TBC symptoms, transmission, and prevention means to demystify the taboo surrounding the disease.
