COMMUNITY AWARENESS PROGRAM ON RISK
MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION

Samusocial Perú and its partner France’s Firefighters Without Borders -.Latin America Office, specialist at community-level intervention for reducing social and sanitary risks, joined forces to implement community awareness actions on risk management and prevention through a participatory approach.

During the first half of 2005 and 2007, training workshops on the Protect – Alert – Help methodology (PAS, in Spanish) were given to community leaders to help them to reduce the risks of their environment, send alerts for aid in case of emergency, and be prepared to intervene in case of sanitary or social emergency. In addition to creating attitudes, values and skills in risk prevention and management, training workshops contributed to foster the appropriation of Samusocial Perú intervention methods by trained community leaders, who became the first link of the emergency chain. Simultaneously to the coordination with community leaders, the network of community organizations was activated to disseminate information and strengthen the coordination base with Samusocial Perú.

Likewise, Samusocial Perú and France’s Firefighters Without Borders also intervene in the health sector, proposing risk prevention and management and pre-hospital care trainings to health personnel of Huaycán Hospital and the Señor de los Milagros Health Care Center, located in a remote area of Huaycán, where Samusocial Perú operates.
